A tattoo is considered minor surgery. It may bleed a bit at first but it will
stop within a couple of hours. Most artists recommend the tattoo be kept
bandaged overnight or for at least two to five hours. If the gauze sticks to the
skin, soak the area with cold water until the gauze loosens, then remove
carefully.
2 hours after getting your tattoo you want to wash your tattoo with soap and
water, (preferably a nice liquid anti-bacterial soap) make sure you wash your
hands first, and only use your hands to wash the tattoo.
Don't use any wash cloths or other scrubbing devices. (These items will irritate
that tattoo and possibly cause some of the color to be pulled out.)
The night you get your tattoo you may want to wear something over the tattooed
area that you wont mind getting dirty. The tattoo will release a little bit of
color and possibly some body fluids when you sleep on the area, so don't be
surprised if you get some sort of imprint on the inside of your clothes that
night, this is very common.
Keep it clean, and lightly moisturize and your tattoo will heal very fast. Some
people heal faster then others, Your tattoo should have very little raised scab
area utilizing this technique, but some people will scab no matter what.
Once the tattoo is exposed, wash it carefully in cold water, gently applying
antibacterial soap with fingers (never use a cloth) to remove all surface blood.
Rinse with cold water, pat dry with a clean towel, and air-dry for 15 minutes.
Then, gently and sparingly apply a thin layer of Tattoo ointment salve. Repeat 3
or 4 times a day for 7 to 10 days.
Do Not apply a bandage to your tattoo! (Your tattoo needs to breath to heal
properly and covering it will keep it from doing that.)
After 2 days all the redness should be gone from around your tattoo. If the area
your tattoo is turns Bright red and burns really bad after two days, chances are
you have a skin infection, These are common with getting tattoo's, the key is
recognizing it as soon as possible and taking care of it before it gets worse.
If you do get a slight skin infection I suggest that you use either Neo-sporin
or some type of anti-biotic cream , use it just like you did the lotion in a
very small amount and rubbing it all the way in.
After 5 to 14 days, the tattoo may start to peel (this is normal ñ like a
sunburn) and scab. DO NOT pick or peel the skin away. Let it fall off naturally
during washing or application of Tattoo Goo. Fresh skin will soon replace the
dead skin. Colors may fade during the process, but will return when healing is
completed.
Ointment salve and lotion keep your tattoos from drying and the skin areas soft
and moist. Always apply sparingly. Too much prevents the skin/tattoo from
breathing, and can cause leaching of the colors. If this happens, discontinue
use, wash the tattoo, pat dry, and consult your tattoo artist at your earliest
convenience.
After a few weeks, all scabbing will be gone, but the area may still be
sensitive. Continue regular cleaning and application of ointment.
To insure to the sun is the major cause of tattoo fading, but after a few months
you may sunbathe in moderation. Always use a sun block (at least SPF-30
sunscreen that provides UVA and UVB protection).
If you experience any reaction to your ointment, discontinue use and consult
your tattoo artist.
